Signs of intelligent life

Every day Wessy seems to surprise me with some new sign of sentience.  Because he can't say too many distinct words (though this list is growing), I often get lulled into thinking that he doesn't understand what is going on around him.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  There have been several little moments lately that showed me just how much he is learning and observing:

-Today at the Cal Academy of Sciences, he was playing with a little toy sink. He kept turning on the dry taps and insisting to the sink, "AWAH, AWAHHHHHH!." AWAH=agua=water.
-Also at the Cal Academy today, he found a basket of fake food among the toys in the toddler play area.  He bit into the avocado enthusiastically, but when it didn't taste as expected, he quickly discarded it.  He also picked up but quickly discarded the banana.
-On a related note, he keeps holding up the bottle of hand sanitizer on his changing table and saying, "AWAHHH!"
-Also today, he pooped in his diaper, then looked at me, grabbed his diaper and yelled triumphantly, "POOOOOOH!!!"
-Two days ago, he was paging through his beloved BOOKAH (the cah buh) and I asked him, "Donde esta la motocicleta?"  He quickly turned the page of the book and pointed right at the picture of the motorcycle.
-He has learned to say uva (grape).  He will say UBBAH! Or just BAH! every time he sees a grape.  If you ask if he wants uvas, he lights up like a Christmas tree.  If he sees a banana, he starts yelling ME ME MEEEE.
-He has started putting both hands in the air and shaking them frantically when he is excited and just can't handle it.  It's so adorable.
-He calls Montse "MIN-NA MIN-NA MIN-NA."  I think he is still working on the M sound.  If you ask if he wants to go see Montse, he will skitter enthusiastically towards her room and barge happily in her door.  He is a big fan of her purse and likes to carry it around.

Current words:
Bookah, Cal, uva, bye bye, mama, dada, bubba, poop, piss, please, no, yeah, si, agua, queso, cheese, keys, dog, gato, aguacate, pan, bath, parque, zapatos, and probably a bunch I'm forgetting right now.

New today...

-Wessy has entered a new phase of his bromance with Cal.  When I walk into his room in the morning, Wessy looks up angelically from his crib and holds Cal up and says "CAAAAAAL," like look Mom, it's my best buddy! Every time he sees Cal, he embraces him with unbridled enthusiasm, biting his muzzle and ears and holding him close.  If I try to lay Wessy down for a nap or for bed and Cal is not in attendance, Wessy looks at me pointedly and says "CAL," and he won't settle until Cal is present and accounted for.  Wessy has also taken to giving Cal rides on his chomp and stomp push toy, which I have no doubt Cal enjoys immensely.
-To my horror, Wessy also continues to deepen his love of motor vehicles. The less fuel efficient, the better.  When he sees pictures of trucks and real-life trucks, his face lights up and he yells CAHHH!  If he sees them on the screen of my phone, he tries to pet the screen.
-New teeth:  Wessy has thus far sprouted six teeth in his life.  He got the bottom two first followed by four on the top.  This all happened several months ago, and all had been quiet on the dental front until a few days ago.  He looks to have two teeth budding out on either side of his original bottom two teeth.  He has been a little testy and not eating as much as usual, so hopefully this passes relatively soon.  Selfishly, I can't wait for him to have a little grill because I think it will be so cute.  The downside will be that our already embattled nightly tooth-brushing regime will become even more challenging.
-New au pair! --We were joined by our new au pair (Alejandra Monserrat or "Montse") a little less than two weeks ago.  Wessy misses Geraldine (if you ask him where she is, he will say "bye bye" resignedly) but he has taken to Montse very easily and she him.  After a few days, she pronounced him "bonito-travieso," or pretty-naughty.  I would say that's about right.
-Diaper changes gone beyond comical and landed on hellish.  He thrashes about wildly while you try to change him, screaming bloody murder and either trying to hurl himself off the table or stick his hands into his soiled diaper.  Or both.  That is why we are soldiering on with our little potty training scheme, though I must report there has been ZERO progress on that front.
