"Just let me try it myself, Mom..."

"...I promise I won't make a mess!"

Daddy says...

Me: "I'm sad my OB is leaving to go to Southern California."
Stevo: "When Wessy's little sister comes along, just go to the ED in Riverside, say you didn't know you were pregnant, and tell them you want Dr. Simpson to deliver your baby."

Daddy says...

"I bought a liver transplant-sized bottle of Tylenol today."

New today...

-Fake chewing: A few days ago Wessy started moving his jaw in a fake chewing motion which was opaque to me for a few days until I realized he was imitating the way I (constantly) chew gum.  What a little mirror: a cute but wounding way to see my own flaws.
-Baby sign language: Several months ago I was a braggart about how Wessy was so good at baby sign language and all that, only to have him basically not do it anymore--until a couple of days ago.  He was on the changing table and I blew a raspberry with my mouth.  He seemed to like it and started grinning. Then he took his little paws and brought his fingertips gently together twice (the sign for "more") while making eye contact with me.  So of course I obliged.  And, of course, he hasn't done it since despite much encouragement.
-Little hands: Wessy has started using his outer hand to massage, tickle, scratch and prod my side while he  breastfeeds. Usually he uses the inner hand to pet my face, or he tries to put his fingers in my mouth.
-Grabby McGrabberson: The point at which I can no longer eat in peace has come.  No matter what I am eating, touching or trying to keep away from him, Wessy wants it.  And he's not afraid to lunge for it.  I have to take my glasses off before I pick him up.
-Babbles: Still no dice on the contextually appropriate "mama" or "dada."  However, if I sign "milk," he will say mamamamaamma.  Progress?

Fancy new toy

Well, despite all our organic, earth-toned age-appropriate food-grade silicone art-deco baby toys, someone has found a fancy new toy he loooooves.  Behold, an empty sour cream container.  There is nothing more exciting to be found in all the land.  Wessy, generally not one for patience, will sit on his own in his pillow nest and bat a plastic container around for up to fifteen minutes at a stretch.  He likes to hold it, examine its intricacies, wave it, lick it, pretend to drink out of it, and ultimately fling it out of reach, whereby he whimpers until some sucker (ma-ma) hands it back to him.

I'm all for his enthusiasm for empty plastic containers.  They are quiet and easy to come by.  In the course of his playing, Wessy is showing off all sorts of new tricks, too.  His unassisted sitting is now nothing short of superb.  He can reach for container, pick it up, manipulate it and pretend it's a bowl.  It's fun and interesting just to watch all the things he can do developmentally now.

I joined the empty sour cream container fun with him today; I put the container on my head and then looked up and let it fall off onto the ground with a loud UH OH.  Wessy had a convulsion of happiness.  Then I put it on his head and he looked up and let it fall off.  He was a bit confused for a second then I said UH OH and he once again exploded into laughter.  We did this just a few times.

He is becoming so much fun.

Hey would ya look there!
What's in there? The maple kind?!
Mmmm.
do do do da dooo
You know what? I really love empty sour cream containers.

A year ago today...

We found out we were having a boy! Mommy already suspected it (she might have been doing ultrasounds on herself) but Daddy was a little shocked.

It's funny how at the time that we found out it seemed to matter a lot whether the baby was a boy or a girl, but now he's just a Wessy. I can't imagine him any other way--boy or girl, healthy or not--I think at the end of the day the baby that comes to you is just your baby.

Not to say that I don't love having a little dude baby:) He's a handsome equal-opportunity flirter and a wiggly little mess. He's our boy.

Mr. Delightful, part two

I've been on nightfloat for the past 1.5 weeks, which has been brutal.  I'm gone 630pm-7am every day.  Luckily my mom (aka Gram aka babmamamabagaga) has been here to help out with Wessy, which has been amazing.  Leaving aside the fact that I am getting no sleep and am functionally cognitively impaired, I am having a lovely time waking up to my boy and spending the afternoon together.

In the last few weeks, he seems to have morphed from a happy little snuggly stuffed animal to a curious, grabby, babbling, whining, writhing, bouncing baby boy.  I just want to try to write down some of the things he is doing so I don't forget them.

There is literally nothing you can put in front of him within striking distance that he will not try to grab.

He loves standing in front of windows, bonus points if he can chew on the windowsill at the same time.

He's shaping up to be an enthusiastic, equal-opportunity eater. He prefers to hold the spoon himself, but will dutifully sit in his highchair and open his mouth for the spoon when you feed him.
When I hold him, he has good enough core control for me to just use one arm under his bottom without having to put a hand on his back.  He will rest one hand on my shoulder or around my neck and then look around, twist his torso hither and thither, pat my face, pull my hair and/or bury his face in my shoulder or neck, depending on his mood. Mama is like a one-stop conveyance machine and entertainment system.

He has starting saving up his poops and having one giant blow out a day.

He will almost never tolerate sitting down under any circumstances.  If you put him in the bjorn chair without buckling him in he will either arch his back and slide on out or, as I found out the hard way, incline forward until he face plants.  When you put him in his car seat, he will pitch forward, as if tacking into a storm, and look around him for opportunities to escape.  He is not a crawler and does not appreciate it when you put him on his belly.
His little teeth are coming through.  He had a little whiny streak a few days back when we suppose they were breaking through, but now he seems more or less back to his solid gold self.  but with little teeth on the bottom. Geraldine informs me that in Colombia these are known as "dientes de ratoncito"--mouse teeth.  I was concerned that his gummy grill would be ruined but I have to admit the teeth are way cute. .

In the past few weeks, he has figured out:
-that rattles rattle
-that water splashes--he will use his hands and feet to create splashes
-that Mommy's glasses come off her face if you pull hard enough
-that he can arch his back and twist his neck while breastfeeding to see behind him, which he loves to do, especially if Stevo is sitting next to me.  If Stevo is there, Wessy will periodically pause his nursing, look back at Dad, grin like, oh hai dad, and then twist back around to resume
-how to say mama! and dada! today, he possibly, maybe said mama to me while Gram was holding him and he wanted me.  which, if it were real, would probably be the best thing that ever happened to me.

Daddy says....

Me: I think we should get a walker or something like that for Wessy since he loves to stand up so much. We can probably get one cheap secondhand.
Stevo: Isn't there an expensive European kind we can get?

Good times with Gram

Lil Tarheel

Turns out that Stevo and I have been very remiss in our parental duty of introducing Wessy to Carolina Basketball.  Gram, however, was on top of it.  She and Wes are watching UNC take on Notre Dame in the ACC tournament.  Wes loves basketball, insomuch as he loves bright moving  screens in general.  Gram was excited to help explain the play-by-play.  GO HEELS!

"Look at that high pick and roll!"
"That was NOT a foul, ref!"
He gets nervous watching the heels, just like his mama!
GO HEELS!!!

Daddy says...

"Wessy, I don't care how old or big you are, if I ever catch you vaping I'm going to spank you!"

Mr. Delightful

I keep trying to reflect on what Wessy is like now, and I keep coming up with one word: Delightful.  Not that he hasn't always been the absolute best A-#1 baby in the world, but he is really just so wonderful to be around lately.

He is still smiling, shrieking and laughing like none other, but he has added a few tricks to his bag.  He will imitate you if you stick your tongue out, for one.

He loves to reach his fat hands out and pet your face.

He has started to give little hugs, wherein he lays his head down on your shoulder and reaches around your neck with his arms. [Heart explodes].

He babbles incessantly.

He kicks and squirms and wiggles so persistently that it is an aerobic exercise to change his diaper or put his clothes on.

Speaking of changing his diaper, he has figured out how to undo the Velcro on his cloth diaper covers.

He will take sudden and unexpected umbrage at various things, like trying to put a hat or pants on him.  How dare you!

He still doesn't give a rat's ass about learning how to crawl.

He loves looking out the window and banging on the glass with the palms of his hands.

Wessy's Apple

This past Saturday, we did our usual Whole Foods run.  Due to not designating a single individual to be in charge of the Ergo, we ended up at the store without it.  Oops.  Our options were to hand-carry Wessy (tiring and probably not feasible), put him in the baby seat in the cart (developmentally inappropriate and dangerous) or put him in the cart in his car seat (the ultimate winner).  Due to placing him in the cart, there was very little room for groceries and we had to take a second cart.  We looked like crazy coupon people that buy like 40 steaks at once, except we were at Whole Foods, where buying 40 steaks at once will bankrupt a two-doctor family.

Anywho, Wessy was king of the cart.  He did well initially, probably because the situation was novel, but then he started getting fussy.  I gave him an apple to gum and he was much pleased.  He held onto it jealously for the remainder of the shopping trip.  Any attempt to take it away resulted in immediate and intense wounded crying.  When we got to the checkout line, he was still gumming it enthusiastically.  I made to take it away from him so that it could be rung up, but the cashier told me not to worry about it.  Thank gawd, I was not looking forward to taking it away.

Fortunately, Wessy dozed in the car on the way home and the apple fell by the wayside.  However, one of his new favorite activities is to sit (supervised) on the counter and plunge his fat paws into the fruit bowl.  He will use both hands to pull out apples or oranges (which are to him as a basketball is to you or me) and then lick or gum them before tossing them aside to grab more.  Maybe I shouldn't let him get used to doing that, but I can't help it, it's so fun to watch.

wessy and mommy

This is a pic of me and my little boo watching the end of Foyle's War.  Daddy and I had watched all but fourteen minutes of the episode before Wessy woke up from his nap.  We were too drawn in at that point to stop watching so he watched along with us.  I believe at this point we were looking at a burned up corpse or something like that.

It had been awhile since we had watched Foyle's War together and Stevo and I agreed that it reminded both of us of Wessy's early days.  When Wessy was just a few days old, we would put his little larval self on the bed between us while we watched Foyle's War, but it had been months since we had done that.   Back then, Wes was indifferent to TV.  Unclear whether he could even see that far.

Well, turns out that now he LOVES TV.  As you can see, he is totally fascinated.  He never sits still in my lap like that at any other time, but he was riveted.  I think we will continue to avoid any regular TV exposure, but if we do have him watch anything, it will probably be high-brow British crime-drama.

New today...

-TEETH: Wessy has two little serrated edges of teeth poking through his bottom gum in the front.  For a few weeks now we could see where they were about to poke through, but now one can feel the sharp little edges with one's finger.  For all that everyone talks about how babies are supposed to be fussy while teething, Wessy has seemed oblivious to this development.  I for one am bereft at the prospect of losing the gummy grill.  Well, as my sister reminded me, it is better that he has teeth than not. Stevo has promised me that he will be responsible for brushing Wessy's teeth.  Stevo is also responsible for brushing Bubba's teeth (a perhaps annual event), so let's hope he doesn't get confused and use the poultry-flavored toothpaste on Wessy.
-Word salad: Wessy has started using consonants.  He still makes high-pitched screams, but now he also "says" dadadadadaaduuuhhh and bababbabababababbuuuuh and maamamadaduuh!  Stevo and I have been in an intense race to get him to consistently say dada or mama, respectively, in a contextually appropriate way.  So far, no dice.
-New clothes: I got Wessy a whole mess of cute new (to him) clothes, which he is obligingly wearing in rapid rotation, being that he wears 2-3 outfits a day due to poor lower esophageal sphincter tone and cloth diapers.  The trendy little baby clothes make him look like a hipster stuffed animal.
-Speaking of stuffed animals, Wessy and Cal continue to deepen their friendship.  Wessy makes out with Cal every night before bed, and will often pet him or grab his fur in his sleep.
-Speaking of grabbing fur, Wessy has started to grab Bubba's fur.  Sometimes he buries his fat little hand in the fur on Bubba's back and grabs a roll of dog skin.  This makes Bubba wary.  It makes me very nervous.  It makes Wessy very gleeful.
-First kitchen sink bath: The other Saturday, I gave Wessy a quick bath in the kitchen sink.  He fit nicely in there.  He was able to sit up on his own, but I'm guessing the slippery metal made him feel unstable.  He reached out his arm and held my arm tightly as a support while he used his other arm to  playwith his rubber ducky.  It was like, yo mom, I got this, I just need you to spot me a little.  That is kind of representative of where Wessy is in his development right now--wanting to explore and experience everything, but needing a little bit of support and comfort.
-He adores standing up but needs you to hold his hands so he won't fall.  Even with the hand holding, his is a little unstable and rocks his hips a bit from side to side.  Stevo has taken to calling this "Elvis Baby."
-Waving: Actually, Wessy can't do this at all.  However, I received a video from my sister of my niece Tater (who is two weeks younger than Wessy) waving hello on cue.  The gauntlet has been thrown down.  Challenge accepted.
-Baby sign language: Wessy is worse at this than he was three months ago.  He used to actually make the "more" sign.  Now if you make the "more" sign or the "milk" sign, he will grin maniacally to indicate enthusiastic assent, but he won't make the hand motions.  Probably because he gets what he wants either way....
-The baby smell: Still got it.  Please don't ever go away.
-Things Wessy finds fascinating nowadays: water bottles (esp metal ones), the garage door as it opens, ANY food that ANYone that is not him is eating, any hair that is not his, new faces, iPhones (delicious).
