He turned 21 months a couple of days ago. He is simultaneously such a big guy and also still a little baby. Sometimes he is like a little teenager in pampers and sometimes he's just a little puddle of love that needs me for everything.
Today he was batting a whisk around in an empty coffee can. I asked him what he was doing. "Cocinando (cooking)," he replied, nonplussed and without looking up. Later I asked him what his name was. "Essy." Of course.
The little boy gene is definitely very strong with this one. He loves sticks, rocks, mud and permutations thereof. There really doesn't have to be a point to his carousing around the woods; he is happy simply trucking around carrying rocks and handfuls of sand to nowhere in particular. One of the best moments of our trip to the Anderson Valley two weeks ago was lying on the banks of the Navarro river watching Wessy have the time of his life sticking his hands in the damp sand and parsing the vast expanse of rocks on the riverbanks.
Last Saturday we went to the zoo. When he saw the chimpanzee, he instinctively put his arms akimbo and curled his fists towards his armpits and said OOH OOH AH AH!! (Coincidentally, this morning when Stevo asked Wessy "Who am I, Wessy?" Wessy also replied, OOH OOH AH AH! Touche.).
We went the petting zoo and he charged furiously at a goat and petted him aggressively, taking pains to point out the poor goat's OJOS MAMA. This was followed by contentedly moving piles of sawdust around the barn for a longer period of time than would seem possible given what I thought I knew about his attention span. He also grabbed handfuls of the sheep's fur and happily climbed up onto a saddle they had mounted on a little bench.
He has started doing a lot of imitating. He repeats A LOT. He will do everything you do, just delicately and in miniature. Once I took his shovel and pretended it was an ice cream cone, which unfortunately led to him wanting to lick the shovel, make smacking noises with his mouth and say RICO HELADO (DELICIOUS ICE CREAM) at every opportunity. The other day he bopped me on the head with his plastic shovel then emphatically told me NO PEGUES (don't hit!)!
Recently he has started to be more interested in music and dancing. He didn't give a rat's ass about the $600 worth of music classes I took him to over the last six months, but NOW he is all about the Itsy Bitsy Spider. Montse will put on some children's music in Spanish for him and he will point his fingers and pump his hands up and down and say BAILA BAILA!
I keep catching little glimpses of a little boy. His facial features are becoming less chubby and smudgy and much more definite. H It makes me so so sad and so so happy. Ten times a day he will say or do something that makes my heart feel like it is going to explode. There's no way to describe it, so here are some pictures that will make your heart explode, too:
