Mr. Delightful

I keep trying to reflect on what Wessy is like now, and I keep coming up with one word: Delightful.  Not that he hasn't always been the absolute best A-#1 baby in the world, but he is really just so wonderful to be around lately.

He is still smiling, shrieking and laughing like none other, but he has added a few tricks to his bag.  He will imitate you if you stick your tongue out, for one.

He loves to reach his fat hands out and pet your face.

He has started to give little hugs, wherein he lays his head down on your shoulder and reaches around your neck with his arms. [Heart explodes].

He babbles incessantly.

He kicks and squirms and wiggles so persistently that it is an aerobic exercise to change his diaper or put his clothes on.

Speaking of changing his diaper, he has figured out how to undo the Velcro on his cloth diaper covers.

He will take sudden and unexpected umbrage at various things, like trying to put a hat or pants on him.  How dare you!

He still doesn't give a rat's ass about learning how to crawl.

He loves looking out the window and banging on the glass with the palms of his hands.

Wessy's Apple

This past Saturday, we did our usual Whole Foods run.  Due to not designating a single individual to be in charge of the Ergo, we ended up at the store without it.  Oops.  Our options were to hand-carry Wessy (tiring and probably not feasible), put him in the baby seat in the cart (developmentally inappropriate and dangerous) or put him in the cart in his car seat (the ultimate winner).  Due to placing him in the cart, there was very little room for groceries and we had to take a second cart.  We looked like crazy coupon people that buy like 40 steaks at once, except we were at Whole Foods, where buying 40 steaks at once will bankrupt a two-doctor family.

Anywho, Wessy was king of the cart.  He did well initially, probably because the situation was novel, but then he started getting fussy.  I gave him an apple to gum and he was much pleased.  He held onto it jealously for the remainder of the shopping trip.  Any attempt to take it away resulted in immediate and intense wounded crying.  When we got to the checkout line, he was still gumming it enthusiastically.  I made to take it away from him so that it could be rung up, but the cashier told me not to worry about it.  Thank gawd, I was not looking forward to taking it away.

Fortunately, Wessy dozed in the car on the way home and the apple fell by the wayside.  However, one of his new favorite activities is to sit (supervised) on the counter and plunge his fat paws into the fruit bowl.  He will use both hands to pull out apples or oranges (which are to him as a basketball is to you or me) and then lick or gum them before tossing them aside to grab more.  Maybe I shouldn't let him get used to doing that, but I can't help it, it's so fun to watch.

This is a pic of me and my little boo watching the end of Foyle's War.  Daddy and I had watched all but fourteen minutes of the episode before Wessy woke up from his nap.  We were too drawn in at that point to stop watching so he watched along with us.  I believe at this point we were looking at a burned up corpse or something like that.

It had been awhile since we had watched Foyle's War together and Stevo and I agreed that it reminded both of us of Wessy's early days.  When Wessy was just a few days old, we would put his little larval self on the bed between us while we watched Foyle's War, but it had been months since we had done that.   Back then, Wes was indifferent to TV.  Unclear whether he could even see that far.

Well, turns out that now he LOVES TV.  As you can see, he is totally fascinated.  He never sits still in my lap like that at any other time, but he was riveted.  I think we will continue to avoid any regular TV exposure, but if we do have him watch anything, it will probably be high-brow British crime-drama.

New today...

-TEETH: Wessy has two little serrated edges of teeth poking through his bottom gum in the front.  For a few weeks now we could see where they were about to poke through, but now one can feel the sharp little edges with one's finger.  For all that everyone talks about how babies are supposed to be fussy while teething, Wessy has seemed oblivious to this development.  I for one am bereft at the prospect of losing the gummy grill.  Well, as my sister reminded me, it is better that he has teeth than not. Stevo has promised me that he will be responsible for brushing Wessy's teeth.  Stevo is also responsible for brushing Bubba's teeth (a perhaps annual event), so let's hope he doesn't get confused and use the poultry-flavored toothpaste on Wessy.
-Word salad: Wessy has started using consonants.  He still makes high-pitched screams, but now he also "says" dadadadadaaduuuhhh and bababbabababababbuuuuh and maamamadaduuh!  Stevo and I have been in an intense race to get him to consistently say dada or mama, respectively, in a contextually appropriate way.  So far, no dice.
-New clothes: I got Wessy a whole mess of cute new (to him) clothes, which he is obligingly wearing in rapid rotation, being that he wears 2-3 outfits a day due to poor lower esophageal sphincter tone and cloth diapers.  The trendy little baby clothes make him look like a hipster stuffed animal.
-Speaking of stuffed animals, Wessy and Cal continue to deepen their friendship.  Wessy makes out with Cal every night before bed, and will often pet him or grab his fur in his sleep.
-Speaking of grabbing fur, Wessy has started to grab Bubba's fur.  Sometimes he buries his fat little hand in the fur on Bubba's back and grabs a roll of dog skin.  This makes Bubba wary.  It makes me very nervous.  It makes Wessy very gleeful.
-First kitchen sink bath: The other Saturday, I gave Wessy a quick bath in the kitchen sink.  He fit nicely in there.  He was able to sit up on his own, but I'm guessing the slippery metal made him feel unstable.  He reached out his arm and held my arm tightly as a support while he used his other arm to  playwith his rubber ducky.  It was like, yo mom, I got this, I just need you to spot me a little.  That is kind of representative of where Wessy is in his development right now--wanting to explore and experience everything, but needing a little bit of support and comfort.
-He adores standing up but needs you to hold his hands so he won't fall.  Even with the hand holding, his is a little unstable and rocks his hips a bit from side to side.  Stevo has taken to calling this "Elvis Baby."
-Waving: Actually, Wessy can't do this at all.  However, I received a video from my sister of my niece Tater (who is two weeks younger than Wessy) waving hello on cue.  The gauntlet has been thrown down.  Challenge accepted.
-Baby sign language: Wessy is worse at this than he was three months ago.  He used to actually make the "more" sign.  Now if you make the "more" sign or the "milk" sign, he will grin maniacally to indicate enthusiastic assent, but he won't make the hand motions.  Probably because he gets what he wants either way....
-The baby smell: Still got it.  Please don't ever go away.
-Things Wessy finds fascinating nowadays: water bottles (esp metal ones), the garage door as it opens, ANY food that ANYone that is not him is eating, any hair that is not his, new faces, iPhones (delicious).
