Life in San Francisco

Well, as of tomorrow we have been here for two weeks!  That seems like such a long time but then again we are still getting settled and getting the house in order.  Being in a new city has been exhilarating and disorienting.  We have enjoyed a lot that the city has to offer already--Golden Gate Park, the DeYoung, SFMoMA, riding the ferry to Sausalito, bike ride to the Golden Gate Bridge, trekking through the Mission, playtime in many different parks and trying out some new restaurants and enjoying old favorites.  Even so, it still seems surprising and strange that we actually LIVE here.  It's sinking in, slowly.

Wessy, for his part, has not missed a beat.  Maybe (MAYBE) he seemed a little out of sorts on the first night when everything in the house was awry and he was up two hours past his bedtime and Geraldine tried valiantly to placate him while I hastily hung curtains in his room.  After that, though, he has accepted his new life in San Francisco as a given.

Frankly, there is a lot more for him to do here and I think he is enjoying it.  Given that we live less than a block from a cute little tot playground, he has been logging some serious hours there.  Some days we have gone three different times.  There is also a children's book shop down the street which holds three story times daily, which Wessy attends on the regular.  In addition to English, they also hold story time in Chinese and Spanish.  Tomorrow is Wessy's first "first day of school"--his first day of music class, which I think he will love.

In addition, he has been an enthusiastic public transit advocate.  When a bus rumbles past our window or he sees one on the street, he is compelled to inform everyone that there is a "BUH!!!" in our midst.  When we are actually on the bus, he is an incorrigible flirt.  The other day, as I was holding him on my lap, he turned around and peered over the back of our seat at a passel of tween girls.  He immediately began grinning and laughing.  Then he stuck out his tongue and laughed some more when they reciprocated.  Then, reaching into his bag of tricks, he started pantomiming combing his hair (?).  They happily played along and played peek-a-boo with him until we got off the bus.

Another bus trick he has developed is tapping people on the arm and then grinning at them when they look over.  Today on the bus, he grinned to himself then reached over to to the middle aged lady beside us as she was reading a book  and brushed his fingers against her shoulder.  When she looked over, he gave her a megawatt smile.   See? Big flirt.

We continue to see new things in the city and Wessy has been taking it all in.  It really is an interesting environment for a one year-old (or anyone else) and I hope we continue to enjoy the city.
